Nari Contractor was a stylish left handed opening batsman who made his Test debut against New Zealand in Bombay in 1955.
His determination and defiance shone against England in 1959 when he slammed 81 at Lord’s despite suffering broken ribs off the bowling of Brian Statham.
Contractor suffered a serious head injury after being hit by a delivery from paceman Charlie Griffith in a tour game in the West Indies in 1962, while leading the touring India side against Barbados.
Contractor represented India in 31 Tests and played 138 first- class games. His international career was halted after that injury, though he made a comeback to first-class cricket. He scored 1611 runs in Test cricket with a highest of 108 against Australia.
After retirement, Contractor took to coaching. In 2007, he received the CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.
