Nisal Fernando was born on 10 March 1970 in Colombo. His schooled at the prestigious St Thomas College in Mount Lavinia. He captained his school in 1989 against Royal in the 110th Battle of the Blues encounter which ended in a draw despite a sporting declaration by Fernando.

He is a right hand batsman and wicket keeper who played 2 ODI Matches for Sri Lanka in 1994. He made 2 not out on his ODI debut versus India at Rajkot on Feb 15, 1994
