Jeremy Coney was born on 21 June 1952 in Wellington. He was an allrounder, batting in the middle order and bowling medium pace.
Coney graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Maori, drama and education. He taught for nine years before leaving as Head of Music to concentrate on cricket.
He made his Test debut against Australia in Sydney in 1974. He went onto play 52 Tests, scoring 2688 runs with 3 centuries and 16 fifties. He also took 27 wickets.
Coney scored 174 not out against England in Wellington in 1983-84 and 111 not out against Pakistan in Dunedin. He also scored 101 not out against Australia at the Basin Reserve in 1986.
Coney captained NZ in 15 Tests, winning 5 matches.
He received the OBE in 1986 and retired from cricket 1987. He is a respected television commentator.
