Glenn Turner was a technically correct right handed opening batsman. He made his first class debut for Northern Districts at the age of 17
He made his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Park in 1969. He made a duck and 40.
Turner played 41 tests for 2991 runs (average 44.64) and included seven centuries. He twice carried his bat through a completed Test innings. In the West Indies in 1971-72, Turner hit four double-centuries in all matches, including his highest Test innings of 259 at Georgetown.
He is the only New Zealander to have scored more than 100 centuries (his 100th was a triple century) in first class cricket. Whilst playing for Worcestershire he was the only county player to score centuries against every other county. In 1973, he became the first player since 1938 to score 1000 runs by the end of May in England. In his total first-class career, he scored 34,346 runs.
Turner captained New Zealand in 10 Tests, securing 1 win and suffering 6 losses.
He was named as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1971.
After retirement in 1983, Turner had two successful periods as coach of the New Zealand team. This included being the first ever Head Coach of New Zealand cricket. He was appointed a selector in 2007.
