Fast bowler with a rolling gait

Brearley, Walter

Walter Brealey was a larger than life character who was heavy set and 15 stone in weight. He was a hostile fast bowler who hated batsmen as he believed they could not bat.

In his Test debut against Australia in 1905 at Old Trafford, he took 8 wickets helping to clinch the Ashes. At this point, Brearley was considered one of the premier bowlers in world cricket. Differences with his county (Lancashire) and business interests prevented him from playing more matches for England. He also refused to tour overseas.

He played only 4 Tests between 1905-1912 taking 17 wickets at 21.11. He took 844 first class wickets at 19.31.
