Albert Neilson Hornby (commonly known as A. N. Hornby) was a prominent English sportsman in the 19th century. He is notable for his contributions to both cricket and rugby.
Hornby was known as a passionate and aggressive player. He was nicknamed “Monkey” Hornby because of his energetic fielding and batting style.
Aside from cricket, Hornby also played rugby union for England and captained the national team—making him one of the few to captain England in two major sports.
A resolute batsman, without a superior as a field, and withal a splendid judge of the game, he had all the qualities to make not only a fine cricketer but a good captain, as his brilliant record at Lancashire proved.
