
Philip John Newport, born on 11 October 1962 in High Wycombe was a right-arm fast-medium bowling and right-handed batting.
Newport was an integral member of the successful Worcestershire side of the 1980s and 1990s, where his consistent seam and swing bowling was pivotal to the county winning seven trophies, including the County Championship in 1988 and 1989.
In first-class cricket, he took a remarkable 880 wickets from 290 matches at a healthy average of 26.97, featuring a career-best of 8/52. A reliable performer in crucial one-day matches, he took 4/38 to help secure the NatWest Trophy in 1994 and was a key component of the team that won the Benson & Hedges Cup in 1991.
Internationally, he played in 3 Test matches for England between 1988 and 1991, claiming 10 wickets.
