Cyril Poole was born on 13 March 1921 and died aged 74 on 11 February 1996. He was an attacking left handed batsman who played for Nottinghamshire and in three Tests for England. He scored 161 Test runs at 40.25. He also played professional football for Mansfield Town, Gillingham and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
In 1951, he won a place in the MCC side to tour India and Pakistan after scoring heavily for Nottinghamshire. Most unfortunately Poole broke a finger whilst practising, prior to the staging of the first match. For eight weeks he was a passenger in the squad, but in late December he recovered and hit 50 in his first game v Maharashtra. This innings was enough to get him drafted into the Eleven for the Third Test in Calcutta. Poole scored 55 and 69 not out on his International debut. These innings meant that Poole retained his place in the Test side for the remainder of the tour.
Poole made his highest first class score of 222 not out against the touring Indians at Trent Bridge in 1952. He made 19,364 runs at an average of 32.54 in first class cricket with 24 centuries.
