
George Hayward Thomas Simpson-Hayward (7 June 1875 – 2 October 1936) was renowned as the last prominent practitioner of underarm, or “lob,” bowling in first-class cricket. His unique style and significant contributions to the game have left an indelible mark on cricket history.
At the age of 34, Simpson-Hayward was selected for England’s tour of South Africa in 1909–10. He played all five Tests of the series, taking 23 wickets at an impressive average of 18.26. Notably, he claimed six wickets for 43 runs in the first innings of his debut Test at Johannesburg.
