Honours even after Philander defies England: 2nd Test, Day 1 (Trent Bridge)

Vernon Philander struck 54 not out in an unbroken partnership of 74 with Chris Morris late in the day to rescue South Africa.

Earlier, Stuart Broad (3-47) and Ben Stokes each struck twice to reduce the visitors from 179-2 to 235-6 after Hashim Amla (78) and Quinton de Kock (68) put on 113.

South Africa 309 for 6 (Philander 54*, Morris 23*) v England.
