Australia lost its second straight match in Group B of the T20 World Cup 2026, succumbing to an eight-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka in Kandy.
Although Australia reached 181, Sri Lanka never allowed a true late-innings surge. Regular wickets — especially after the powerplay — meant Australia couldn’t fully capitalise on the strong starts from Mitchell Marsh (54) and Travis Head (56). The difference between 181 and a 195+ total proved crucial.
The target of 181 looked a testing one, and Australia made an early inroad when Stoinis had Perera caught at deep point. But Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis then added 97 off 66 balls to keep the match in the balance. Nissanka’s 100* wasn’t just about runs — it was about pacing. He absorbed early pressure, rotated strike, and then accelerated decisively once set. By batting deep, he removed scoreboard anxiety and neutralised Australia’s death-bowling plans.
Australia is under severe Qualification pressure and is all but eliminated. The defeat dents their points tally and hurts net run rate. Australia will only go through if Zimbabwe loses both its remaining games, against Sri Lanka and Ireland. In this case, both teams will end up with four points each. But even then Australia will need to have a better Net Run Rate to pip the African side.
