Phillips, Henry edge NZ ahead of England: 2nd Test, Day 2 (Oval)

New Zealand took firm control of the second Test at The Oval on day two after Glenn Phillips completed a superb maiden Test century to lift the visitors to 391 in their first innings.

Resuming on 291-7, the Black Caps added valuable lower-order runs, with Phillips finishing unbeaten on 104 and receiving strong support from Kyle Jamieson. England’s bowlers struggled to wrap up the innings quickly, allowing New Zealand to post a formidable total.

England’s reply showed promise at times, with Emilio Gay making 53 and Joe Root contributing 46, but neither batsman was able to convert their start into a match-defining score.

Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke led the fightback for New Zealand, striking at key moments to leave the hosts in trouble at 222-6 by stumps. Trailing by 169 runs with only four wickets remaining, England face an uphill battle heading into the third day.

England 222 for 6 (Gay 53, Henry 2-57) trail New Zealand 391 (Phillips 100, Blundell 51, Bethell 3-26) by 169 runs.
