England hit back after Latham, Conway record triple ton stand: 3rd Test, Day 1 (Nottingham)

New Zealand took control of the opening day of the decisive third Test at Trent Bridge, finishing on 361-4 after a dominant batting display.

Captain Tom Latham led from the front with a superb 151, while Devon Conway added 157 as the pair shared a record 317-run opening partnership, the highest opening stand by New Zealand against England in Test cricket.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the visitors made full use of favourable conditions and largely frustrated England’s bowlers throughout the day.

England mounted a late fightback with the second new ball, claiming four wickets during the final session to prevent New Zealand from ending the day in an even stronger position.

Ben Stokes broke the marathon opening stand before Joe Root removed Conway, while Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson also struck late to leave the visitors at 361-4 at stumps.

Despite the late breakthroughs, New Zealand hold the early advantage heading into day two of the series decider.
