Root maiden ton props England: 2nd Test, Day 2 (Leeds)

Joe Root struck his maiden Test century on his first appearance on his home ground to keep New Zealand at bay.

The 22-year-old Root reached 104 in England's 7-337. Another local, Johny Bairstow hit 64 and between them the two young Yorkshiremen combatted the Kiwi bowlers, who fought back tenaciously with the second new ball, to put on 124.

Earlier, Cook won the toss and decided to bat after Day 1 had been washed out.
