Emilio Gay is a left-handed opening batter born in Bedford, England, on 14 April 2000.
A graduate of the Northamptonshire academy, he made his first-class debut in 2019 and quickly earned a reputation as a technically sound and patient red-ball player. Through his mother’s family, he is also eligible for Italy and has represented the country in T20 international cricket.
Gay enjoyed a breakthrough period with Northamptonshire, highlighted by a career-best 261 against Middlesex in 2024. His consistent performances led to a move to Durham, where he continued to produce runs at the top of the order. By 2026, he had accumulated more than 4,700 first-class runs at an average exceeding 40, underlining his status as one of England’s leading domestic batters.
Renowned for his composure and classical technique, Gay is regarded as a specialist for the longer format of the game. Strong displays for Durham and the England Lions placed him firmly in contention for higher honours, with many viewing him as a player well suited to Test cricket. His ability to combine patience with elegant strokeplay has made him one of the most highly regarded young openers in the English game. Gay made his Test debut against NZ at Lords in June 2026.
