Frederick Ridgway was a right-arm fast-medium bowler. Born on May 25, 1929, Ridgway had a notable career in county cricket with Kent. He played first-class cricket mostly during the 1950s and early 1960s.
While enjoying a career in both cricket and football, Ridgway was one of England’s oldest Test cricketers when he made his debut in India in 1951. He played 5 Tests and took 7 wickets.
He was an accomplished fast bowler, spearheading the Kent attack in the years following the Second World War. Though he lacked the pace of a Loader or Tyson, many felt that he was unfortunate to win only five Test caps.
Ridgway was known for his accurate bowling and ability to maintain pressure on batsmen. While not a prolific batsman, he contributed useful lower-order runs when needed. His consistent performances made him a valuable member of the Kent bowling attack during his playing years.
Ridgway took 1,067 wickets in 341 first class games. Among many match-winning returns, his best was in 1950 against Nottinghamshire at Dover, when he took 8 for 39.
Ridgway died at Maidstone on 26 September 2015.
