Padikkal 167 strengthens Indian control before rain: 1st Test, Day 2 (Galle)

India remained firmly in control at Galle on a rain-affected second day, reaching 460/9 after only 43 overs were possible.

Devdutt Padikkal converted his overnight 131 into a superb 167, his maiden Test century, while KL Rahul (82) and Dhruv Jurel (51) also made important contributions. India added 172 runs but lost seven wickets, with Sri Lanka’s spinners finally finding some assistance.

Sri Lanka’s Prabath Jayasuriya (4/109) and debutant Keshara Nuwantha (3/175) led the fightback, removing Padikkal, Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Jurel among the later wickets. Nevertheless, India finished with a commanding total and Kuldeep Yadav (12) and Prasidh Krishna (1)** unbeaten.

With Sri Lanka still to bat, India will look to finish their innings quickly on Day 3 and put the hosts under pressure.
