Root, Bairstow down India with record chase: 5th Test, Day 5 (Edgbaston)

Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow delivered a stunning win over India after their highest successful Test chase, coasting to a series-levelling seven-wicket victory in the rearranged fifth match against India at Edgbaston.

Starting day 5 on 259-3, Bairstow's 114 not out and Root (142 not out) stitched an unbroken partnership of 269.

Their partnership was the fourth-highest by any pair in the fourth innings of a Test, while the run chase surpassed the previous England record of 359, set when Stokes stunned Australia at Headingley in 2019.

The series was drawn 2-2.

England 284 (Bairstow 106, Siraj 4-66, Bumrah 3-68) and 378 for 3 (Root 142*, Bairstow 114*, Lees 56, Crawley 46) beat India 416 (Pant 146, Jadeja 104, Anderson 5-60) and 245 (Pujara 66, Pant 57, Stokes 4-33) by seven wickets
