Brilliant Bethell’s maiden century provides England hope: 5th Test, Day 4 (SCG)

Jacob Bethell unbeaten on 142, his maiden Test century — also his first-ever class century — anchored England’s innings and stretched play to the last day.

Day 4 at the SCG saw England mount a spirited fightback to keep the fifth Ashes Test alive, led by a superb century from Bethell that steadied the innings after early setbacks.

Australia wrapped up their imposing total early in the day and then struck regularly with the ball, but Bethell’s calm, defiant knock frustrated the hosts and swung momentum back England’s way.

Despite late wickets falling, England finished the day with a narrow lead, setting up a tense final day with the match still finely balanced and Australia facing a manageable but not straightforward chase.

England 384 and 302 for 8 (Bethell 142*, Duckett 42, Brook 42, Webster 3-51, Boland 2-34) lead Australia 567 (Head 163, Smith 138, Tongue 3-97, Carse 3-130, Stokes 2-95) by 119 runs.
