1992: Simmons powers Windies win over South Africa on first visit (Jamaica)

After South Africa won the toss and elected to field, West Indies posted a formidable total behind a masterclass from Phil Simmons.

The opener set the tone for the innings, dominating the Proteas attack with a blistering 122 off 113 balls, featuring 12 fours and five sixes.

Brian Lara added a fluent 50, alongside handy contributions from captain Richie Richardson (30) and Keith Arthurton (27), propelling the Hosts to 287/6 from their 50 overs.

South Africa’s run chase started promisingly with Andrew Hudson scoring a steady 50 off 70 deliveries. However, the visitors failed to build meaningful partnerships against a disciplined West Indies bowling attack.

Despite resistance from Hansie Cronje (42) and Jonty Rhodes (17), Winston Benjamin led the breakdown of the lineup with 3/45, supported by tight spells from Patrick Patterson and Anderson Cummins.

South Africa were eventually bowled out for 180 in 42.2 overs, securing a dominant 107-run victory for the West Indies.
